The experimental chamber collective Collectress, who create unique surrealist-tinged chamber pop and have been described as a cross between "the Elysian Quartet and possessed Brontë sisters teasing an unsuspecting dinner party" (Foxy Digitalis) release a video today for new single "In The Streets, In the Fields".

Using dance as a means to explore the nature of the music, and with nods to both psychedelia (particularly 13th Floor Elevators), and the 1937 recording of Virginia Woolf’s “Words”, Collectress play at taking you somewhere imaginary whilst staying grounded in reality- ‘in the streets’ yet also ‘in the fields.’  The band remark "we liked the sense of the transience of language as evoked by the crackly Woolf recordings, of time passing and of spaces shifting, of being in one place yet another at the same time, in “Different Geographies”. In this technological world of ours, Woolf’s “Words” speaks to us from the past, visionary in suggesting we are mere vessels for language to occur, adapt and move around in. “In the Streets, In the Fields” melodically ‘sets off’ and in some way is doing this too, its simple structure unfolding, shifting and developing over the course of the song."
Collectress continue "the film for "Streets" was always going to include dance as a means to explore and express the nature of the music. We talked about parts of the body, colours and ‘elements’ to include. We each gave our interpretation and filmed ourselves dancing at our own respective ‘different geography’. What you see in the film is a layering of those interpretations to the rhythm and layers of the individual parts of the music, to create an indefinable space that we hope has something recognisable and grounded but that also allows for an element of getting lost."

Sky Valley Mistress  recently caught our attention supporting Black Moth at their Leeds farewell show in December, and having signed to New Heavy Sounds, their debut single and its attendant video feels like the passing of a baton.

Sky Valley Mistress spent 10 days recording at Dave Catching’s Rancho de la Luna studio in California, hanging out with the likes of Hutch (QOTSA’s ex sound man), Bingo (Mojave Lords), Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), Peaches and Arctic Monkeys who also dropped by during the stay.

Footage from their time out there is featured in the video for new single ’Skull & Pistons’. Guitarist Sean ‘Starsky’ Berry comments, ‘Skull & Pistons is about Max’s (drummer) leather jacket and the cool things he’s done in it, the video shows the band’s coolest journey to the desert to record their debut album, it was an obvious choice for a debut single and although this jacket is literally now falling of his shoulders it makes a cameo in this film.’

Sky Valley Mistress are 4 young upstarts from Blackburn, Lancashire, who have been honing their chops over the years up & down the country, and showcasing their blistering live set at Download, Camden Rocks and Sound City along with supports with The Subways, Cadillac Three, Earthlings and Band Of Skulls amongst others.

In fact, SVM could easily hold their own against the likes of Jim Jones, Rival Sons, Royal Blood, BRMC or any other rockers greasy or otherwise.

Still only in their mid 20s, you can only assume, on listening to this debut, that these young turks made that journey to those legendary crossroads and did the dirty deed with the dark one himself, such is the level of musicianship and vocal prowess on show here.

So how did they hook up with Dave Catching?  That’s a story in itself. It was Halloween & the band all went to an Eagles of Death Metal gig in fancy dress as members of EODM and their friends.  After the show the band blagged their way backstage.  The boys in EODM loved their costumes and SVM gave Dave Catching some of their tracks and asked for him to check them out.

Dave later came back to them and said he really liked what he heard and that if they were thinking of doing an album they should record at his place in California, the legendary studio at Rancho de la Luna.

And so it eventually came to pass.

The result of that meeting of minds and souls is the full spectrum stoner rock ‘n’ roll assault of ‘Faithless Rituals’.

‘Faithless Rituals’ will hit the world on 20th March 2020.

Upcoming shows:

Wed 29th Jan – The Jacaranda, Liverpool as part of Independent Venue Week

Wed 18th March – The Fulford Arms, York

Human Impact, a “band that collects members from three of New York noise’s most important groups — the hardcore-influenced, ultraviolent Unsane, industrial anger mongers Cop Shoot Cop, and erstwhile Lower East Side pummelers Swans” (Rolling Stone), have released a video for “E605”.

The Samuel Mitchell-directed clip visually echoes the gritty, industrial-tinged noise rock on the band’s forthcoming, self-titled debut album (March 13, Ipecac Recordings). It is the second song to preview the 10-track release, with the band previously sharing the song “November”.

Since 2017, something has been lurking in the shadows around Merseyside, snarling from the unseen corners with a piercing horror-metal atmosphere; that something is Video Nasties, and they’re ready to strike with their moral-panic inducing heaviness.

Comprised from members from some of Liverpool’s finest heavy exports in The Bendal Interlude, SSS, Magpyes and Iron Witch,  the quintet that is Video Nasties mix death metal with punky and thrashy undertones, creating something morbidly macabre and devilishly debauched.

Recently signed to the label – on Halloween 2019 no less – Video Nasties finally bring their reign of terror to APF Records. Set to unleash their debut full-length Dominion [APF025] on Friday 13th March (of course) on all good formats – LP, CD, cassette and digital – Video Nasties are content to lurk no more; get ready for their slasher soundtrack to rip your eardrums to pieces soon.

‘Drone Eagle’ is the first taster to be shared, described by bassist Rick Owen as a song about, ‘Armageddon. We’re going to hell in a hand basket, baby and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. A demise driven by power, greed and corruption.’

Jonathan Hultén, the darkly enigmatic Swedish Grammy-winning songwriter has released the first single & video for track “The Mountain” taken from his debut solo album Chants From Another Place, due for release on Kscope on 13th March.

The musical inspiration for singer/songwriter Jonathan Hultén’s debut album Chants From Another Place is drawn from acapella folk and church choir compositions. Throughout the album, tales are weaved and musical influences collide as HULTÉN draws comparisons to artists including Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Wovenhand and Fleet Foxes, as well as traditional folk artists such as John Martyn right through to his contemporaries in Anna Ternheim, José Gonzales, Anna von Hausswolff Chelsea Wolfe & Hexvessel.

“The Mountain”, the album’s debut single (released 10th January), is a potent yet minimalistic ode to loss and hope. Telling a tale of soul in distress, goes forth on a journey and faces death, transformation and rebirth is accompanied by a stunningly emotive animated video, created by Hultén himself, taking visual influence from the likes of Tolkien, Tove Jansson and art nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.

Watch ‘The Mountain’ here:

HULTÉN will join CHELSEA WOLFE on tour, opening for her ‘Birth Of Violence’ acoustic tour in the UK & Europe in March 2020. “The live show is focused on reproducing the mystical state of mind in which the songs themselves were created,” he says. “Incense and lights that follow the music are the keys and draws you into the tranquil yet sometimes dramatic world that Chants From Another Place inhabits. Like watching a sunset; peaceful, sometimes kind of intense while also slightly psychedelic.”

At last, an astonishing new creature from the Six Organs sound-lab is ambulatory, and upon us. On Companion Rises, Ben Chasny mixes synths and digital processing techniques with spacey guitar folk to lift his signature song-craft further out, while bringing it strangely full circle at the same time. Exquisitely arrayed and rich with harmonic exploration, the album presents a handful of cosmic folk-tales whose theme can best be stated as "Stellar-Gnostic."

With "Haunted and Known", the second single from the forthcoming Companion Rises, Ben’s darkly ominous acoustic riff is wound with elegantly resonating synth and electric guitar tones, unwinding seductively before becoming engulfed by the static drift of granular synthesizer.  A deep ballad to begin with, "Haunted and Known" is floated into a liquid world of non-linear waves, representing in microcosm the sonic spectre described by Kristen Gallerneaux in her "literary mixtape" High Static, Dead Lines.

With heightened perceptions, "Haunted and Known", along with the rest of Companion Rises, demonstrates sci-folk at the right time for the terrifying new decade. Prick up your ears and give a listen, the new album awaits you.

Toundra, the intrepid instrumental rock band from Spain that recently announced the release of Das Cabinet Des Dr.Caligari are proud to present the first video/single from the album, which will be available on February 28th 2020.

You can now enjoy the first song, Akt. 1, here:

The video is taken from the first Act of the movie to which Toundra have composed a breath-taking original soundtrack. The film is a quintessential German silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene that turns exactly 100 years old in 2020, and that the band approached it as a dialogue with the listener with the intention of questioning ideas like manipulation, freedom and human nature itself.

There has also been a tour announced this week, a unique opportunity to watch the movie while the band performs the album entirely.

Mary and the Ram (the studio project of The Trembling Hellish Infernal Nightmare Generator’s Kiran Tanna and The Parasitic Twins’ Dom Smith) have released the video for latest single, ‘Eclipse’ which was released on October 18, 2019 through Syndicol Music.

For Fans of The Dresden Dolls, Death From Above 1979, Marilyn Manson, Nick Cave and Nine Inch Nails.

Recorded at Melrose Yard Studios in York, UK and co-produced between Kiran, and New York-based Kallie Marie (Explosives For Her Majesty), the band have also hooked in the talents of Dave Ogilvie (The Weeknd, NIN, Skinny Puppy) for mixing, and mastering by Howie Weinberg (Thirty Seconds To Mars, Mars Volta, Nirvana).

Dom had this to say on the video:

"’Eclipse’ is the darkest thing we’ve put out. I could tell you what it’s based around lyrically, but we wanted some solid occultish symbolism so that people can make up their own minds – is it about dark relationships? is it just our nightmarish fantasy? There are numerous themes and ideas in Duncan’s animated work, and we look forward to people’s interpretations."

MaTR has also made efforts to expand the live sound, recruiting musicians from both York and Hull to join the group as full-time members: Edward Alan Logie (Modern Mood Swings) and Sarah Shiels (Black Delta Movement). Live dates will be announced soon.

Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker may be a bit more mainstream than your usual artist featured at Aural Aggravation, but this is crisis. Besides, there’s no question about the prospect of getting a song entitled ‘Cunts Are Still Running the World’ that slams capitalism and right-wing governments to number one would be an ultimate act of subversion. Which is why it gets the Aural Aggro vote (unlike the cuntiest of cunts, Boris lying bastard Johnson).

So what happened?

A fun little Facebook group, started by a couple of lefty music fans has, this week, become the focus of national and international attention.

Rising from nothing to 20,000+ members in its 4 days of existence, the FB group ‘Fancy Getting “C**ts Are Still Running The World” to UK Xmas No. 1?” has now received the endorsement of Mr Cocker’s label Rough Trade Records AND the man himself – and he’s decided that proceeds from single sales this week will benefit SHELTER, the homeless charity.

Purchase the song from iTunes (or wherever) from now until the end of Thursday 19th December. Links:

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead bring fans another new song today with the release of “Into The Godless Void.”  Everything kicks into full pelt with this noisy and thrilling existential anthem that follows the news of the band’s first new album in six years, their upcoming 25th year anniversary and a European headline tour.  Just last month …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead announced the January 17th release of X: The Godless Void and Other Stories along with their first new song and video for “Don’t Look Down” which Rolling Stone called “…a bustling rock track carried by rushing drums and fuzzy guitars….”

“Into The Godless Void” is a track that founding member Jason Reece says deals with “this existential woe that all humans tend to go through – feeling that weight that plagues the mind.”  Fellow founding member Conrad Keely adds, “Songs have a life of their own.  If you listen to them, they’ll tell you how they want to manifest.”
