Le Butcherettes, who are in the midst of a European tour, have unveiled the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez directed video for “My Mallely”, which appeared on their 2015 album, A Raw Youth (Ipecac Recordings).

The video was filmed in the contrasting locations of New York City and the ruins of Juárez Mexico, in a neighbourhood and cinema that was a casualty of the 2008-2013 war. Teri Gender Bender offers context to the video: "The juxtaposition of the video’s setting, place and time is a roller coaster of emotional history. Juárez. A lost city re-emerging. New York City. Feeling lost in a city that has been emerging. The duality is a constant in every feeling and way. No matter where you are, one absorbs their surroundings and grows within the chaotic element. That to me is the beauty of survivalism."

There must be something in the air. Or the water. Or maybe it’s climate change. Or perhaps it’s simply how things go with the passage of time: Courtney Love becoming uncool has slipped off the radar, and there’s a whole new generation discovering Live Through This and albums by L7 tucked away in their parents’ CD collections. This is certainly the most rational explanation for the current rash of female-fronted grunge-orientated bands. It makes sense: look at the contemporary female role models. Outside the mainstream, proliferated by slick, overproduced r’n’b and anodyne pop and as promulgated by the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Miley, strong contemporary female role models ae few and far between: even the likes of Amy Lee and Hayley Williams – a front-woman who spawned infinite clones by virtue of being practically alone in her field – are inching towards moving beyond the position of well-established toward establishment. Besides, they never stood out quite as strong as the old guard: neither of them had the guts of Courtney in her prime, or Lydia Lunch, ever.

Weekend Recovery are a Kent-based band, who cite the likes of Paramore, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World amongst others as their influences, and they’re pretty self-evident in their debut single, ‘Focus’, which sees them go for what they describe as ‘a straight up catchy pop punk number’. It’s also precisely what they deliver.

But make no mistake, this is a band with ambition, grit and drive, not to mention some songs with aggression and edge, and here’s no question that Lorin Forster is a strong vocalist and front woman. Cliché as it is, with some high-profile support slots booked, they’re ones to watch.

Having already guaranteed themselves a slot in the AA best albums of 2016 list, Mayflower Madame are offering up a video to accompany the track ‘Upside Down (the death loop)’. The psych/goth act enlisted Norwegian art collective Born For Burning to direct the video: "We wanted to make the impression that the video consists of two different found tapes. Inspired by the gloominess of the song we sought to make the images of the video disturbing and shot with a lo-fi camera. Some key ideas were trafficking and crime scene footage, partly inspired by the movie Lilya 4-ever by Lukas Moodysson."

Leeds-based purveyors of darkly psychedelic country, Fighting Caravans, follow up on the promise of their Beasts of England EP and a string of intense live shows with the release of the single  ‘Blue Heart Motel’  on 1st July. Released on 7” vinyl and digital formats, it’s accompanied by a suitably twisted promo video, which you can watch here – and we recommend you do.

Norwegian avantgarde rock/metal band Virus who release their new album  ‘Memento Collider’ next month have shared a new video made by Costin Chioreanu, who has worked with the likes of Paradise Lost, At the Gates, Mayhem, Spiritual Beggars, Roadburn Festival and many more. ‘Shake Shake’ from Irish girl-rock act REWS may be  bit more accessible than a lot of the stuff you’ll usually find here at Aural Aggravation, but we’re all about music that excites us, and we know a cracking song when we hear one. ‘Shake Shake’ is a cracking song.

Consisting of songstress Shauna Tohill and beat-maker Collette Williams together they’ve been creating a genuine buzz with their brand of punky alt-rock including plays from Kerrang Radio, Planet Rock, Team Rock Radio, Steve Lamacq, Amazing Radio and Dan O’Connell on Radio X.

They also play at The Great Escape this year.

Featuring members of Joanna Gruesome, Thin Privilege and Black International, Glasgow purveyors of no-wave noise are unleashing their debut album via Good Grief records on a pay-what-you-want basis. Which means you can get it for free, but obviously,  chipping in a few quid is a good way to show appreciation  and to help bands to keep making music. This one’s definitely worth it. Chelsea Wolfe recently announced the release of the Hypnos/Flame 7” scheduled for April 1st via Sargent House, following on from her most recent album Abyss. She has now unveiled a haunting new video for ‘Hypnos’.

The video features Wolfe draped in serpents, fading between fleeting moments of clarity and pixelated visual noise. Hypnos was the Greek god of sleep, and this video translates Wolfe’s distorted love song of the same name into a stark, black-and-white hallucination. The video was self-directed by Wolfe, shot and edited by Ben Chisholm with additional camera by Ricky Verrett.

‘Hypnos’ and ‘Flame’ are both spare and haunting; even at her quietest Wolfe’s music is full of tension and fierceness. ‘Hypnos’ is available to listen and share now via the Sargent House soundcloud. The two songs are available on a special deluxe version of Abyss, available digitally April 1st, which will also feature demo versions of album tracks ‘Grey Days’, ‘Simple Death’, and ‘Survive’. Pre-order is available for the 7” via Sargent House, and digitally via iTunes.

This week will see the release of One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache, the fittingly-titled, collaborative debut between apocalyptic doom duo, The Body, and grindcore/harsh noise sculptors, Full of Hell. Set for release on March 25th via Neurot Recordings, the offering came together during last year’s massive North American trek which united both bands. Amidst the chaos of tour life, the two groups found time to record together at Machines With Magnets in Providence, Rhode Island. The session eventually culminated into the harrowing sounds found on One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache, which is ultimately an audio reflection of their surroundings and their inability to cope therein.

As a precursor to its release, they’ve unleashed the video accompaniment to second movement, “Fleshworks.” It’s suitably challenging, and you can watch it here:

Liverpool three-piece, Elevant are set to release a new single on their own Elevant Music Limited imprint on the 4th of March 2016.

Audience’, the follow up to the recent ‘Again’ single, was recorded at 3rd Planet Recording Studios in Liverpool and was self produced, engineered by Kyle Western and mastered by Pete Maher (Jack White, Patti Smith, Scissor Sisters). Available to download, the new single takes inspiration from The Melvins, Nirvana and Bauhaus and is a taste of what to expect from the Elevant’s eagerly awaited forthcoming third album ‘There Is A Tide’ which is due for release on the 4th of March.

The Elevant line up of Michael Edward (guitar / vocals), Tom Shand (drums / piano) and Hannah Lodge (bass / organ) have over the last two years combined their love of My Bloody Valentine, God Speed You! Black Emperor, St Vincent, Tame Impala and Portishead to create something very special. Effortlessly twisting a pop hook to their post punk, psych and krautrock sound to great effect, there is an energy and vision that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

A truly innovative and exciting live band, Elevant are set to play the following UK shows to coincide with the new single and album release. The dates will include a hometown album launch show at Liverpool’s Buyers Club on the 9th of March and a London date at the Sebright Arms on the 16th of March with label mates Too Many Poets.
