Avant group Hifiklub has shared a new track, ‘Weird Five,’ featuring the legendary Iggor Cavalera (MixHell, Cavalera Conspiracy, Pet Brick, co-founder of Sepultura). The song is a part of the French trio’s audio-visual collaboration, ScorpKlub I & II Original Soundtracks, with the Montreal animator James Kerr (Scorpion Dagger). The double-sided record — which features Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eleven) in addition to Iggor Cavalera —will be out digitally as well as on different colored vinyl on 27 May 2022 via Electric Valley Records.

Hifiklub bassist Régis Laugier on ‘Weird Five’: “1 Day as A Lion, 2Pac, Spacemen 3, Gang of 4, Electric 6, L7… Something was missing. What about the “Weird 5”? Let us know what’s your favorite band with numbers in their names. Venus Principle are premiering the melancholic and powerful new track ‘Drag Nets’ as the final single taken from the dark psychedelic rocker’s debut full-length Stand in Your Light, which has been scheduled for release on May 27.

‘Drag Nets’ makes subtle use of a wide range of instrumentation from sax to mellotron vibes and Mini Moog, and the stunning vocal chemistry between Daisy Chapman and Daniel Änghede comes into play again as well.

The band comment: “After the initial recording sessions for Stand in Your Light were postponed, we had a chance to write a few more songs”, guitarist Jonas Stålhammar tells. “The last one written was ‘Drag Nets’. It turned out to be by far the heaviest track on the album. ‘Drag Nets’ represents the waste and rejects of man. You can trawl the sea for food and treasure, but humankind will always carelessly discard all unwanted matter only for it to be rediscovered as flotsam and jetsam. The idea of adding saxophone was a last minute thought in the studio when I reached the conclusion that we had too many guitar solos on the album already. Our amazing guest on the saxophone, August Eriksson, copied my guitar solo note for note and then added some improvised sprinkles.”

Having been away from the recording studios for nearly seven years, Melbourne-based black-metal collective Thrall appeared to be relegated to the fate of “cult act”, especially considering they vanished after releasing their most accomplished and critically lauded album Aokigahara Jukai.

Back with an enlivened recorded line-up that features members of Gatecreeper, Noose Rot, ex-Extinct Exist, Förfalla, Slothferatu, ex-Ruins, Mar Mortuum and Myotragus, the group picks up where they left off, merging some primeval and heinous black metal, with a ferocious thrash metal attack, a raucous crust and miserable doom atmosphere.

Ripping, engaging, and despairing, new album Schisms shows a vast number of guests joining Thrall in studio and hopefully will cement Thrall position as one of most interesting and creative bands from the current Australian extreme metal scene.

Plotting a rapid follow-up to their acclaimed 2021 debut album, the track arrives as the first insight of what the band confirm will be their upcoming second full studio release.

Whereas much of their debut album, ‘Deathretro’, was thrashed out during the band’s first incarnation almost 15 years ago, “Exit Point” stands as Deathretro’s first completely original composition in over a decade.

A frenzied post/punk thrill, it veers and swerves through surf-carved curvatures and barbed guitar prangs, as the band spout nihilistic lyrics for the end-of-days.

Touching on the darkest of themes with a white-hot intensity, “Exit Point” rages against religion and propaganda in a dystopian realm of vivid, Dantean imagination.

Having already aired the track live at a smattering of live fixtures, Adrian of Deathretro sums-up the response so far:

“This is the only second album track that we have played live and to great reception…It’s punky, urgent, does it’s job and f**ks off”

‘Long Time Ago’ is the driving new single by ‘Woodooman’, Cardiff Multi-Instrumentalist and Artist, Iwan Ap Huw Morgan.

The second single to be taken from forthcoming Album ‘Y Nos’, which is due for release on 24th June; ‘Long Time Ago’ follows in the wake of the fantastic Welsh Language track ‘Y Nos Mewn Cariad’ that was released last month to a very warm reception including praise from BBC DJs Huw Stephens, Adam Walton, God Is In The TV Blog, Golwg Magazine, Lisa Gwilym and Rhys Mwyn.

London based doomy post-punk band Nothingheads unleash the lead single Jukebox as part of their upcoming Digging EP, to be released digitally via London based Holy Dotage Records (Spizzenergi, Voodoo Radio) and as a limited edition tape cassette via Just Step Sideways (Beige Banquet, Civil Partnership, Tommy Cossack).

Propelled by a disco beat and rolling bassline, Jukebox’s energetic and compelling mix was captured by producer Chris Smith and recorded at Press Play Studios In Bermondsey, South London.

Nothingheads say “Jukebox is about retreating into a ‘doom cave’, tuning out and turning it up”.

Formed through a shared love for the capital’s DIY music scene, Nothingheads songs draw no boundaries – no subject is too confusing, no sound too eclectic. The band write collaboratively, harnessing the noise and energy that comes from playing together.

Nothingheads are Rob Fairey (vox / guitar), Matt Holt (bass / synths), Ed Simpson (guitar) & Joe Zain (drums). They’ve been described as ‘creepy post-punk doom and gloom from a basement’ by Turn Up The Volume and ‘part metallica, part punk, part psychedelia’ by Play It Loud UK. Having previously supported Japanese Television, Ugly and DeafDeafDeaf, the band have recently headlining both The Victoria Dalston and Shoreditch’s Jaguar.

Composer/producer Jay Crocker turns to exuberant noise-tinged polychrome electronic avant-jazz on his third JOYFULTALK album for Constellation.

Crocker revisits his early musical years as a jazz/improv guitarist in Calgary’s out-music scene of the 2000s, laying down new licks on Familiar Science alongside bass, synth, midi sequencing and stacked wordless vocals, while splicing and dicing additional guest recordings.

Features a virtual combo with contributions from percussionists Eric Hamelin (Ghostkeeper, Chad Vangaalen) and Chris Dadge (Lab Coast, Alvvays), horns and flutes from Nicola Miller (Ryan Driver, Doug Tielli) and archival tape of the late Calgary saxophonist-iconoclast Dan Meichel.

Jonestown, Texas-based proto-metal/heavy psych bringers PETH have shared ‘Abolish the Overseer’ single off their upcoming debut, Merchant of Death, which is set for release on 27 May 2022 via Electric Valley Records (digital and vinyl – multiple variants) and The Cosmic Peddler (vinyl – US Editions).

According to PETH: “‘Abolish The Overseer’ is a new age proto-metal song dedicated to the trashing of any form of oppression in modern society.”

Central Texas is well known for its underground heavy rock ‘n’ roll from the late ‘60s,’70s, and ‘80s: — a series of sounds different than any other place on earth have been originated and evolved from here time and time again. Fast forward some 50 years later and there are still the same hell-raisin, beer-drinking, guitar-slinging rock ‘n’ cowboys makin some noise in the Lone Star! Hence, it’s no surprise that in the 21st century, a band like PETH come along and start making some big ‘70s Texas noise!

Born in the middle of the 2020 pandemic, these four native Texans have been doing all the maniacal and lawless exploits with a wild mix of early ‘70s proto-metal and heavy psych/occult rock soundscapes matched to that of early Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Medusa, Venom, Blue Cheer, Pentagram, ZZ Top, and the likes. Conjuring evil guitarmonies (what they call guitar harmonies), explosive trucking bass and drum section, and two knock-out vocalists, PETH truly help preserve the spirit of Texas’s old way of life while helping usher in this new era of rock ‘n’ roll for generations to follow.

PETH’s debut LP, Merchant of Death, is a hidden gem of the ‘70s/’80s metal invasion, but got discovered in the 21st century. The album in part brings menacing aggressions, in part brings breathtaking rhythms, but steers clear of the modern, lustrous sonic aesthetics. Roll out the red carpet for Merchant of Death and revel in the wilderness.

Hull quintet Low Hummer have shared new single ‘Talk Shows’ ahead of their debut appearances at SXSW this week. The first new music since their acclaimed debut album appeared in September 2021, ‘Talk Shows’ is another piece of danceable, synth heavy post-punk from the East Yorkshire band as they continue to create essential documents of alienation & discomfort as lyricist Dan Mawer touches on societal pressure to drink, body dysmorphia and the dirge of late night Saturday TV.

Continuing their run of collaborations with Leeds producer Matt Peel at his studio The Nave, ‘Talk Shows’ finds Low Hummer blending noughties indie beats with 80’s post-punk synths, spiky guitars and their unmistakable ear for a hook, as vocalist Aimee Duncan takes centre stage delivering this message of modern angst with her inimitable delivery,  as deadpan, cool and tongue-in-cheek as ever.

Bolstered by regular play across BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing and support from Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1, excitement about the band has continued to build since the release of ‘Modern Tricks For Living’ – with a sold-out run of Dinked Edition Exclusive vinyl, a headline slot on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading & Leeds, a twitter listening party with Tim Burgess and a UK tour support with with Welsh indie icons Manic Street Preachers all keeping the band busy last year.

‘Talk Shows’ lands as the band arrive in the US for their debut shows outside of the UK, ready to represent their beloved Hull and it’s DIY scene to a brand new audience. With support from BBC Introducing & PRS Foundation, Low Hummer and their label Dance To The Radio Records will be in Austin for the week for a number of showcases including the British Music Embassy at Cedar Street Courtyard on the 19th March.

After SXSW the band will be playing more shows across the UK for the remainder of the year, including their first London headline show at The Lexington on 13th April.
