Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: because neither music reviewing nor cranking out postmodern novels no-one reads doesn’t pay the bills, like most writers and people slugging along in the lowest reaches of the music industry – personally, I like to pretty it up by describing it as ‘operating at a grass roots level’ – I’m compelled to endure the drudge of corporate life to survive. After a bad day at the office – which is every day – I like the fact I can either escape into discovering brilliant new music. Equally, it’s immensely satisfying to savage a release just because I can’t get away with calling my boss a cunt and the rage has to find some outlet.

So here I am, unwinding with a pint of homebrew and among the email stack that’s perhaps even more terrifying than my inbox at work, and Plastic Baricades present themselves. I really shouldn’t like this: the band cite an incongruous list of influences including Radiohead, Oasis, The Shins, Biffy Clyro, Coldplay, Muse, Razorlight, and Nirvana.

They’re pitches as being ‘romantic and honest, gloomy and curious, melodic and melancholic’, a band who ‘chronicle life in the troubled yet fascinating XXI century with painstaking sincerity.’ No question: these are troubled and fascinating times. If we entered the new millennium with a sense of trepidation, there was no way anyone could have predicted the shitstorm that is Trump and Brexit and… well, the list goes on.

‘How Goldfish Grow’ is a supremely summery tune with a feelgood vibe. It’s built around a nagging guitar line and buoyant bass groove, and with a huge, hooky, singalong chorus, infectious may be a cliché but the most appropriate word going to describe ‘How Goldfish Grow’.

Not so long ago, we streamed the video for ‘The Mound’ from the debut double-A-side single by Girls in Synthesis. We’re now pant-creamingly excited to be able to share its partner, ‘Disappear’. Yeah, we like riotous, scuzzed-out punk noise, so get your lugs round this:

Having already guaranteed themselves a slot in the AA best albums of 2016 list, Mayflower Madame are offering up a video to accompany the track ‘Upside Down (the death loop)’. The psych/goth act enlisted Norwegian art collective Born For Burning to direct the video: "We wanted to make the impression that the video consists of two different found tapes. Inspired by the gloominess of the song we sought to make the images of the video disturbing and shot with a lo-fi camera. Some key ideas were trafficking and crime scene footage, partly inspired by the movie Lilya 4-ever by Lukas Moodysson."

Leeds-based purveyors of darkly psychedelic country, Fighting Caravans, follow up on the promise of their Beasts of England EP and a string of intense live shows with the release of the single  ‘Blue Heart Motel’  on 1st July. Released on 7” vinyl and digital formats, it’s accompanied by a suitably twisted promo video, which you can watch here – and we recommend you do.

Chelsea Wolfe recently announced the release of the Hypnos/Flame 7” scheduled for April 1st via Sargent House, following on from her most recent album Abyss. She has now unveiled a haunting new video for ‘Hypnos’.

The video features Wolfe draped in serpents, fading between fleeting moments of clarity and pixelated visual noise. Hypnos was the Greek god of sleep, and this video translates Wolfe’s distorted love song of the same name into a stark, black-and-white hallucination. The video was self-directed by Wolfe, shot and edited by Ben Chisholm with additional camera by Ricky Verrett.

‘Hypnos’ and ‘Flame’ are both spare and haunting; even at her quietest Wolfe’s music is full of tension and fierceness. ‘Hypnos’ is available to listen and share now via the Sargent House soundcloud. The two songs are available on a special deluxe version of Abyss, available digitally April 1st, which will also feature demo versions of album tracks ‘Grey Days’, ‘Simple Death’, and ‘Survive’. Pre-order is available for the 7” via Sargent House, and digitally via iTunes.

Meanwhile, you can watch the video here:

York/Manchester-based noise-punk band SEEP AWAY have unleashed a remix of their debut single, ‘Trudge’ by US industrial heavyweights Cyanotic as a free download, one day after the track was debuted on Regan! Cyanotic mastermind Sean Payne had this to say about working on the track: "It’s like grimey UK hardcore on top of digital bangery: angry robot style!"

The collaboration came about following initial interest from SEEP AWAY drummer, Dom Smith: "I’m a massive fan of industrial and alt-electronic music, and the rest of the band are all about finding new ways to develop the sound, so Cyanotic was a natural choice – Sean’s work, and his label Glitch Mode’s output has always been awesome. I’m really proud of this."

Cyanotic’s previous remix and production credits include: Front Line Assembly, Chemlab and 16volt. For more information on the band, visit: https://www.facebook.com/Cyanotic
