Norway’s Shaving the Werewolf, known for their unique blend of noise rock and mathcore, has just released an animated music video for their single ‘’Sentient Husk,’ which is taken from the band’s most recent release, the God Whisperer EP.

“The video is a septic mess showing a general apartment complex from the future. People are miserable, the living conditions are hostile, enveloping pollution thickens, the wealth is spread unevenly to a perverse extent and power is centralized to one individual who develops a god complex because of it,” says vocalist Ottar about the clip.

He adds, “To withstand existence in such disagreeable conditions, people take to chemical solutions to dampen their symptoms—depression, feelings of alienation, loneliness, suicidal ideation, and general hopelessness. The guy on top is happy to provide whatever keeps the tenants ‘happy’ as long as he doesn’t have to deal with their problems.”

Since their inception in 2010, Shaving the Werewolf has delivered disagreeable music for disagreeable people, blending power violence, noise rock, and mathcore into an uncanny chimera. Their live shows, described as a slow-motion car crash or an endless head-smashing into a brick wall, have left audiences both gagged and worried.

They have churned up mosh pits at Høstsabbath, competed with metal extremists like Rotten Sound and God Mother, and even mooned Swedish model Vendela Kirsebom. These rat-fink hardcore pioneers are sure to leave a mark on your psyche.

Throughout their journey, Shaving the Werewolf has released several EPs, singles, and a full-length album. Last year, they released a split-tape with Bergen’s hardcore antiheroes Utflod.

Next up is their EP, God Whisperer, inspired by pathological know-it-alls poisoning the world with their selfish and militant ignorance. The band delves deeper into their established sound, offering catchy hooks and jagged edges, all bathed in corrosive dissonance.

God Whisperer was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jørgen Øiseth Berg, with artwork by Martin Mentzoni. It was released on March 22nd.

Darkplace is a mysterious new Swedish dark dream pop/post-punk group who created a conceptual debut album inspired by the bleak landscape of the Stockholm suburbs that birthed them.

Centred around an alternative reality – or just the grim present and future? – and entitled About The End Of The World, the album is being unveiled gradually over the coming months via a series of imaginative visuals based on animated digital paintings for each of its eleven tracks.

Having recently released ‘Arken över Hesselby’ (The Ark Over Hesselby), the video for which presented the outskirts of a city haunted by an unknown aerial presence, the clip for brand new single ’Fearmonger’ takes us into the heart of that city, presenting an apocalyptic scenario as ominous sirens wail and a lone soldier flees the prying ‘eye in the sky’ of an airship.

The Swedish national alarm system is still tested on a quarterly basis by the army. A familiar sound to all Swedes, the sound of the siren has the nickname ‘Hesa Fredrik’. Darkplace state: “After trying to improve Hesa Fredrik, the government learned that the new horns scared the shit out of people.”

Although rooted in late 80s/early 90s indie styles, Darkplace incorporate a variety of other genres into their sound. However, for the members of this highly secretive group, it is not just about the music. They perceive themselves as more an art project that happens to be exploring and commenting on the state of the world through their chosen mediums of music and video.

Most of the short instrumental pieces on the forthcoming album were written with specific storyboards in mind, with the band revealing that “we started creating the art before we had the music for both singles to date, so the tracks were written as soundtracks to the animation.”

The art itself is a multi-layered process that involves photography, sculpting, oil painting, digital editing and animation. Using apps like Nomad Sculpt to create it before exporting scene specific angles and imported into Procreate to be painted, they add: “we use oil paintbrushes and paint over the photo. It is layers upon layers and it gets messy. Exporting gets even messier since we want depth in the scenes and need to export them in layered depths. A few scenes in this project have been animated frame by frame and it has taken almost two years to complete.”

Ky is the new ‘solo’ project of Ky Brooks, best known as vocalist and lyricist of noise-punk trio Lungbutter and a slew of other Montréal-based out-music projects, including 8-person queer punk collective Femmaggots and experimental/improv trio Nag. Ky is a long-standing and shining figure of Montréal’s music underground: they co-founded essential Montréal DIY space La Plante a decade ago, and alongside playing and performing in all sorts of projects and contexts ever since, they’re also a recording and front-of-house sound engineer about town (and on the road with acts like Big|Brave).

‘The Dancer’ is one of the album’s standout electro tracks—in this case melded with the ‘band’ configuration that also features sporadically on Power Is The Pharmacy: guitarist Mat Ball (Big|Brave), bassist Joshua Frank (Gong Gong Gong), and drummer Farley Miller (Shining Wizard) join Ky and the album’s core electronics collaborator Nick Schofield on a song anchored by crisp, phased synth arpeggiation and ghostly pads. As the band kicks in with a wicked little whiplash rhythm, Ky walks a fine line between bemused irony and unadorned sincerity (as their abstemious poems-turned-lyrics so often do) while synth ostinatos and sheets of whitenoise guitar add momentum to the inexorable groove.

The video by Ky’s friend Eric Bent features an animated child learning to move and crawl and walk, through dance: an ode to the primordial immanence of moving to music, and a fitting companion piece to the album’s most danceable track and its lyrical literalism.
